HOW MUCH SUNLIGHT ?

As Australia moves into spring and summer, sunlight becomes easier to find—and more important to manage intelligently. The goal is not to fear the sun or to “bake” in it. It is to get enough light and ultraviolet exposure for health while avoiding the one outcome we know is harmful: sunburn.
Australia has one of the world’s highest skin-cancer burdens, and excessive UV exposure is a real risk. But it does not follow that all sunlight is bad. Skin cancer risk is strongly linked to cumulative UV damage and, mainly via - burning. Sensible exposure is different from repeated overexposure.
Sun exposure is NOT the only reason for skin cancers;
“Sun exposure and melanomas on sun-shielded and sun-exposed body areas” (Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology, 2014).
It reports that approximately 10% of primary melanomas arise at sites not exposed to the sun. These include:
Acral melanoma, affecting palms, soles and beneath nails
Mucosal melanoma, occurring in the mouth, nasal passages, genital tract or rectum
Uveal melanoma, occurring inside the eye
These melanoma types occur in tissues that do not receive meaningful solar UV exposure, demonstrating that cancer development can involve genetic susceptibility, cellular mutations, immune factors and other biological pathways—not UV alone.pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih
Vitamin D is one reason this balance matters. In Australian national data, almost one-quarter of adults were vitamin-D deficient in 2011–12; deficiency was also reported in around 27% of Indigenous adults in 2012–13. If you spend most days indoors, cover most of your skin, have darker skin, carry more body fat, or avoid the sun entirely, your personal risk may be higher.[aihw.gov][aihw.gov]
Vitamin D is not merely a “bone vitamin.” Its active form behaves as a steroid-like hormone, helping regulate calcium and phosphorus absorption for bone health, while vitamin-D receptors influence gene activity in many tissues. It is involved in muscle function, immune signalling, cell growth and the wider endocrine system.[pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih][pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih]
The sunlight reality
The popular message to avoid sunlight altogether is too simplistic. Yet “early morning and late afternoon sun” is not automatically a reliable vitamin-D strategy either: vitamin D production depends on UVB, which varies dramatically with season, latitude, cloud cover, skin tone, clothing and the day’s UV Index. Research in Australia has found that when the UV Index is below 3, opportunities to generate meaningful vitamin D within 30 minutes can be limited.[pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih]
Use the UV Index—not the clock—as your guide. When UV is 3 or higher, protect exposed skin and do not stay out long enough to redden or burn. Short, regular outdoor exposure plus a blood test where appropriate is a smarter plan than chasing a fixed “20 minutes” every day.
Action plan
Check the daily UV Index for your location, particularly as spring progresses into the high-UV Queensland summer.
Spend time outdoors in the first two hours after sunrise and before sunset for daylight, movement and circadian rhythm. Do not assume these windows alone will reliably correct vitamin-D deficiency.
If UV is 3 or higher, use shade, clothing, a hat and sunglasses; use sunscreen on skin that cannot be covered. Choose a zinc oxide sunscreen without all the carcinogenic chemicals in commercial sunscreens.
Reapply sunscreen—mineral zinc products included—every two hours outdoors, and sooner after swimming, sweating or towel-drying.[cancer.org]
Avoid “building a tan” or working up to an hour of unprotected midday exposure. A tan may be a sign of UV injury, not a health target.
If you suspect low vitamin D, ask your clinician for a 25-hydroxyvitamin-D blood test. Correcting a genuine deficiency may require diet or clinician-guided supplementation—not more deliberate burning.
The message is clear - enjoy the sun but treat it with respect and your health will improve.
